Canada’s refusal rates for visitor visas soar
The article mentions two sources that could have contributed to the increased number of denials. One is applicants from countries in turmoil, which makes sense as they have all the reason to claim asylum in Canada once they arrive. The other is Chinese visitors (especially ones affiliated with the state). I am happy the Canadian government is taking the Chinese Communist Party seriously. Student visas are another factor. Universities have a target for international student enrolment, and if the number of applicants exceeds increases faster than the targets, you expect to see the percentage of denials rise. It’s not clear whether students apply for visas after or before they receive offers of admission though, so my conjecture here might be wrong. Either way, this seems like a trend that is likely to continue but is not rooted in malice or a fundamental change in who we let in.
